We’re still in Staniel Cay. The day started out awesome. We took the dinghy into town and did some stuff with the free WiFi at Taste and Sea Cafe. It isn’t open for lunch on the weekend so we met Jean-Marie and Jane for lunch at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club. Fran and I split an order of conch fritters and a conch po’ boy sandwich. it was delicious.

After that we took the dinghy to the “pig beach”. There was one pig that came out to greet us. He probably watched us eat bacon for breakfast. We decided to not land the dinghy because there were lot of seagulls there too. We did take pictures of the pig.

Then we inflated our floaties and floated off the boat. Several boats came by and commented that we looked like a corona commercial.

The only bad thing here is that a lot of big party boats came in today and anchored near us. Some of them are rude, buzzing us with their jet skis and playing loud Spanish music. Otherwise, the place really great. We hope they leave soon.

Today, our second day in Staniel Cay, we took the dinghy into town. but first, we waited out a squall which turned out to be nothing. Then we went to the blue grocery store and bought some bread, English muffins, zucchini and a mango. Then we went to a “festival”, where they had food and crafts for sale. We split a grouper finger meal which was more than enough for both of us. Then we went to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club, ordered a Kalik and Pina Colada and sat on the porch.

When we got back to our boat we had somehow squished our loaf of bread. Maybe we should have waited until after snorkeling.

The anchorage in Compass Cay would have been great except for the strong currents that spun us around in circles. It made us nervous, but our anchor held fine. We followed our track out and motored to Staniel Cay.

We anchored in Big Major anchorage and took our dinghy to Staniel Cay Yacht club. We went the Pink Pearl grocery store and we lucked out because the mail boat came today and it had been two weeks since the last time. The produce hadn’t been unloaded yet so we went to the Taste and Sea Cafe. It was. closed, but we used their free WiFi. Then we went to the yacht club and had Kalik lights and cracked conch. Next we went to the BaTelCo store and bought a prepaid SIM card. When we went back to the Pink Pearl groceries we bought lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, green pepper, eggs and yogurt. We talked to many other cruisers along the way.

Compass Cay

We left Warderick Wells this morning and headed to Compass Cay. We anchored outside of the marina and took the dinghy to the marina. They charged $10 per person to land there, plus we bought two beers at $5.50 each and paid $10 for a 100MB of WiFi that went by pretty fast. But it was a cool place. We watched people swim with the sharks, watch them work on their watermaker and talked to some people in huge motor yachts. We think it was worth the experience.

Warderick Wells Day Three

Warderick Wells
Warderick Wells

Today we did some boat projects before we played. I changed the fuel filter and messed with other engine stuff. We also ran the water maker for 5 hours. Last night we ran out of water and we had to run the generator. Fortunately we had our 5 gallon solar shower so we could take warm showers. We are using about 20 gallons of water per day. We had estimated it at 12 gallons per day.

Boo-Boo Hill

We had a great day in Warderick Wells. First we took the trail to Boo-Boo Hill. It is named that because people believe they hear “boo boo” from either ghosts of dead sailors or the wind blowing through holes in the rocks. I think it must be ghosts. Cruisers leave their boat name on a piece of driftwood at the top of the hill. We weren’t ready for that, but we enjoyed the view. Then we walked to the blow holes. The tide was low so we didn’t get to see water coming out. but it was very scenic anyway. When we hiked back down we had a picnic lunch at a shaded table on Powerful Beach.

We went back to the boat and rested before we went snorkeling. We tied the dinghy to a mooring and Ron snorkeled while Fran looky-bucketed. We saw lots of sea life, including grouper, rays and the biggest lobster we’ve ever seen. Then we took the dinghy to a sandy spot and anchored and sat in the water in our floaties. We couldn’t ask for anything better.

Warderick Wells

After a rolly night on a mooring ball in Hawksbill Cay, we changed our plans to stay another night and headed to Warderick Wells, the Exuma Park headquarters. This was a good decision because this place is way more protected than Hawksbill and the winds we expect to gust again tonight.

Cairn

The word of the day is cairn. I kept seeing references to a cairn in charts and guide books for Hawksbill Cay. I had to look it up after we grabbed a mooring ball in the south mooring field. A cairn is a mound of rough stones built as a memorial or landmark, typically on a hilltop or skyline. I can see the cairn from our mooring.

After our short trip motoring from Shroud Cay to Hawksbill Cay, we put down the dinghy and went to the beach. We blew up our floaties and sat in the crystal clear water. Ron snorkeled around but saw nothing but sand and rock. Then he climbed a trail up the hill. The trail didn’t go all the way to the cairn, but the scenery was breathtaking.

Today was our second day in Shroud Cay. We planned to explore the southern creek in the morning, but the tide was low and it was a little rough, so we just looked around south of the mooring field.

For lunch we went to The Journey. It was supposed to be a picnic but we had a big spread. Everything was delicious.

Today we went from Normans Cay to Shroud Cay. It was a short trip so we didn’t bother with the sails. Shroud Cay is our first stop in the Exuma Land and Sea Park. From the mooring field it looks about like Normans Cay or Highborne Cay. But you can take your dinghy up the creeks and see some awesome sights. Today we went with The Journey to a beach on Exuma Sound. We walked up to “Camp Driftwood”, which is not really a camp, its only a sign. But the view is gorgeous. We also swam at the Beach. It was like a Corona Light commercial. The color of the water is unbelievable. Pictures could never do it justice. We may never leave.
