Thursday, June 12 – There are strong currents in this anchorage and we wake up at 1:30am because the boat is in front of the anchor and it keeps hitting the rode. The anchor holds fine.

In the morning I replace the v-belt. The old one is stretched and dusty. I need to change the bracket so the pulleys are aligned properly.

We get underway and the engine is still running at 190°F. Today the current is helping us and we get to St. Augustine at 12:30pm and get on a mooring just before a big storm hits.

Later that day we put down the dinghy and go to shore. We go to dinner at the Backyard. This is a great place if you have a dog. It’s even pretty good if don’t.

We head back to Questeria in the dinghy. The motor cuts out when we slow down, but we are able to get back before it rains.

Saturday, June 14 – We test the engine under load. We go through the Bridge of Lions and fill up on diesel and water. Then we get a mooring on the south side of the bridge. Not a thorough test, but we didn’t see the engine temp above 165°F.

After we are tied to the mooring I clean the carburetor of the dinghy outboard.  I don’t get a chance to try it because we decide not to go ashore today. Tomorrow we will leave at 6:00am and try to get to Daytona Beach.

We really enjoy St. Augustine. We even discussed staying here all summer. But we decide to continue on south, knowing we will be back here again.

We leave Fernandina Beach and start heading back to the FL Keys today. We get up at 5:00am and get underway by 6:15am. We are hoping to get to St. Augustine by 3:15pm and be moored before the predicted thunderstorms hit.

Shortly underway the engine starts running hotter than we think it should. We pull over and drop the anchor. The engine cools a little. We pull the anchor and continue at a reduced RPM of 1500. The current running against us doesn’t help and we motor along at 3-4 knots (3.5-4.6 mph). Going under one bridge there was a really stong current and we slowed down to 1.6 knots (1.8 mph).

Shortly after 3:00pm we get the predicted thunderstorms. We are close to an anchorage, called Spanish Landing. We pull in and drop the anchor in the rain. When the rain subsides we pull the anchor and drop it a little farther out of the channel. We decide that we are done for today.

Fran and I left Questeria alone in Fernandina Beach, FL while we stayed with Alicia, Jackson and Jeff to help out until Oliver is born. We didn’t think it would be long, but have been gone for almost two months.  We have never been away that long, especially with the A/C set to 75, a freezer full of food and the watermaker on auto-flush every five days. On Thursday June 5, I drive the van down there by myself, while Fran stays to help out.

I dreaded what I would see, but everything is fine. The A/C is still running and the freezer and watermaker are fine . The boat does need a good cleaning. That would not normally be a problem, but the water is out on the dock because of a leak. But they help me move to another dock and I am able to give her a good cleaning. I put on scuba gear and clean the prop. The water is so murky I have to do it by feel.

I drive back to NC on Sunday. I bring two pounds of shrimp from the freezer to share with Alicia, Fran, Jackson and Jeff, for dinner.
