Here are some books that we use on Questeria. Some of these items can be purchased by clicking on the pictures or links.

Modern Marine Weather: From Time Honored Maritime Traditions to the Latest Technology, by David Burch
Book Cover

I thought I knew a lot about marine weather when I bought this book but there was a lot I didn't know. This book combines age old marine weather knowledge with todays technologies. It contains a lot of information that I never realized was available. I had some questions and was able to contact the author, David Burch, and my questions were resolved.

I bought this book as a Kindle eBook. We prefer eBooks now since we don't have room to store physical books on the boat. I have used this book to understand how to analyze weather data and I have developed apps based on things I learned. See Apparent Wind Calculator, True Wind Calculator and Wind Speed Calculator.

Marine Medicine: A Comprehensive Guide, Adventure Medical Kits, 2nd Edition Kindle Edition by Eric A. Weiss MD
Book Cover

We think a medical/first aid book is critical for cruisers. This book is perfect for our needs. It is an eBook, which means we can search for key words. It is thorough and contains information pertinent to cruisers, such as jellyfish stings. We have found this book valuable when cruising or at the dock.

The Gentleman's Guide to Passages South: The Thornless Path to Windward , by Bruce Van Sant
Book Cover

This book tells you how to cruise the Bahamas and Caribbean in the most comfortable way. It tells you what paths to choose and how to decide when to take them.

Some other cruisers lent us their copy of this book and we decided we had to have our own copy. We have both read it multiple times and now our copy is getting worn out and we are thinking of getting it as an ebook. It seems like all the cruisers in the Bahamas have this book.

Bahamas bound, a Skipper Bob Publication
Bahamas Bound

We've been fans of Skipper Bob Publications for a long time and this book is no exception. It explains in clear and easy terms how to prepare for your cruise to the Bahamas and what to expect when you get there. It is perfect for first time Bahamas cruisers from the US.

Waterway Guide Bahamas (Dozier's Waterway Guide. Bahamas)
Waterway Guide Bahamas

The Waterway Guides contain a wealth of information for cruisers. The Bahamas guide is organized by area, such as Abacos, Berry Islands, Exumas, etc. Each section contains information about marinas, anchorages and many other things cruiser might be interested in. The book has waypoints and recommended routes. It even suggests compass course degrees for crossing to and from many common points in the US and Bahamas. They are updated annually, but the changes are minimal so you can use them for several years.

The Dozier's Waterway guides website www.waterwayguide.com contains a lot of information and lets you sign up for a free weekly cruising newsletter.

Explorer Chartbook Near Bahamas
Book Cover

This chartbook, along with Explorer Chartbook Exumas Ragged Islands and Explorer Chartbook Far Bahamas and Turks & Caicos are commonly used by cruisers in the Bahamas. In addition to all the paper charts with waypoints and recommended routes you need for the Bahamas, they contain other valuable information you may need when cruising the Bahamas.

The Exuma Guide 3rd ed., by Stephen J. Pavlidis
Book Cover

This book is commonly used by cruisers in the Exumas. We referred to this book often when planning and during our Bahamas trip.

The Cruising Guide To Abaco, Bahamas: 2015 , by Steve Dodge
Book Cover

We bought this when we thought we were going to Abaco Bahamas. We ended up going to Exumas instead, but we recognize this to be a great guide for anyone planning to go to the Abacos.

Bahamas Northwest - Bimini & Berry Islands - Nassau to Abaco - Grand Bahama (NV.Charts, Reg. 9.1)
nv-charts Reg. 9.1, Bahamas North West, Bimini & Berry Islands, Nassau to Abaco, Grand Bahama

We were happy with the Explorer Charts but we really wanted some digital charts that would work with OpenCPN. The NV Combo packs are paper charts, guide books and digital charts all-in-one. We bought them only for the digital charts but the paper charts and guide books were a real bonus.

We also bought the nv-charts Reg. 9.2, Bahamas Central, Andros to Exumas & Eleuthera Islands and the nv-charts Reg. 9.3, Bahamas South East, Cat & Long Islands, Rum Cay to Turks and Caicos combo packs.

Creative Anchoring: Everything a Cruising Sailor needs to know about Anchoring, Anchor Gear & Related Skills, by Cap'n Fatty Goodlander
Book Cover

This is another book that we got as a Kindle eBook. It is one of those books that you wish that all the boats in your anchorage have read. Early into this book we realized that we knew the basics of anchoring, but there were a lot of details that we never thought about. Anyway the style of this book is very entertaining and even if you are an anchoring expert you will enjoy the humorous anecdotes in the book.

Marine SSB Radio for "Idi-Yachts": A Guide for Using Marine Single Sideband Radio, by Captain Marti Brown
Book Cover

This book came as a bonus when we bought our Icom M802 SSB radio from Defender. The book is out of date, but still has a lot of good information. You can go to the author's website, www.idiyachts.com/FREE_STUFF.html and down-load a CD ROM ZIP file with more information.

Intracoastal Waterway Chartbook Norfolk to Miami, 6th Edition (Intracoastal Waterway Chartbook: Norfolk, Virginia to Miami, Florida), by John J. Kettlewell and Leslie Kettlewell
Book Cover

You'll find a lot of East coast cruisers have this book on board. We used ours everyday on our first trip from FL to NC. It not only contains all the charts for the ICW, but it has information on bridge heights and openings. It also has general information about marinas and anchorages along the way.

This book is no longer available.
Managing the Waterway, Hampton Roads, Va to Biscayne Bay, FL: An Enriched Cruising Guide for Intracoastal Waterway Travelers, by Mark and Diana Doyle
Book Cover

This is another useful book for ICW cruisers. We almost wore our copy out on our trip from FL to NC. It is organized by mile marker. It contains many colorful facts about the areas along the ICW, but highlights the important information, like bridges, anchorages and marinas.

Note: This book is out of print and has not been updated in a very long time. We used this book on several of our trips, but it is too outdated to use at this time. The authors have created new books to replace this book. (See next entry)

These books are no longer available.
I've left the previous information about these books for reference.

AnchorGuide for the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)
Volume 1: Hampton, VA to Hilton Head, SC
Volume 2: Savannah, GA to Miami, FL, by Mark and Diana Doyle
Book Cover

We bought these books when they were first released. We paid about $30 each. I thought it would be worth it since I used Managing the Waterway (above) so much. But since then, they have become a non-profit and lowered the price to $9.95 for print and $4.99 for iBooks. We know that the authors know the ICW because we have seen their boat Semi-Local on the waterway.

These books have detailed descriptions of anchorages on the ICW, with detailed charts showing depths into the anchorage. They aren't as useful as they once would have been because now we can use sites such as ActiveCaptain and Salty Southeast Cruiser's Net to find anchorages. One problem we have with these books is that some of the anchorages are shown as "do not anchor, cable areas".

Anchorages Along the Intracoastal Waterway, a Skipper Bob Publication
Anchorages Along the Intracoastal Waterway

Every cruiser on the Atlantic ICW needs the latest copy of the Skipper Bob books. We used this book, and Skipper Bob's Marinas Along the Intracoastal Waterway every day on our trip from FL to NC. They tell you what anchorages and marinas are available, their characteristics and tips for cruising the ICW.

Another Skipper Bob book that we used in preparation for our Bahamas cruise is Bahamas Bound. This book has lots of good information for first time Bahamas cruisers.

Note:You can now purchase these as E-books

Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach : A Philosophic and Practical Approach to Cruising, by Don Casey and Lew Hackler
Book Cover

This excellent book should be read or reread anytime you think about putting off cruising. It explains that there may be far fewer necessities for cruising than you think. It also has lots of ideas on making the most of what you already have.

The Cruising Life: A Commonsense Guide for the Would-Be Voyager, by Jim Trefethen
Book Cover

This book also tells you how to go cruising. Some of the chapters didn't apply to us since we already owned a boat, but there is some good advice and some laughs too.

Marine Diesel Engines: Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Repair, by Nigel Calder
Book Cover

If you have a diesel engine on your boat, this book is a must. It's written in a way that's easy to understand and it got me going when we had to be towed to Oriental, because of a bad starting solenoid.

Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems, by Nigel Calder
Book Cover

I consider this book a must for any boat owner. When we were in the boat yard, at Duck Creek, Jim told us we should read this book from cover to cover and then go back and read it again.

How Boat Things Work: An Illustrated Guide, by Charlie Wing
Book Cover

This is another good book to have. It is not as complete as the above Nigel Calder book, but it has some useful things, like illustrations showing how to tie some useful knots.

The Care and Feeding of the Sailing Crew, 4th edition, by Lin and Larry Pardey
Book Cover

We really enjoyed this book. Although it talks about Seraffyn's 50 day passage from Japan to Canada, there are lots of tips for any boater, even if you never leave the marina.

Storm Tactics Handbook: Modern Methods of Heaving-to for Survival in Extreme Conditions, 3rd Edition by Lin and Larry Pardey
Book Cover

You may never plan to sail in a storm, but this book tells you everything you ever need to know in case you are ever unexpectedly caught in a storm.

Sailboat Hull and Deck Repair (IM Sailboat Library) by Don Casey
Book Cover

This is a very useful book if you own an old fiberglass boat, like Questeria. We refer to this book over and over as we attempt to fix our deck leaks.

Note: We followed a lot of advice in this book, including the use of poly sulfide caulk, but now we have discovered something better than poly sulfide. It is called "butyl" tape.

Don Casey's Complete Illustrated Sailboat Maintenance Manual: Including Inspecting the Aging Sailboat, Sailboat Hull and Deck Repair, Sailboat Refinishing, Sailboat Electrics and Canvas and Sail Repair., by Don Casey
Book Cover

We recently the above book with this one. It contains the complete copy of several of the Don Casey books into one larger book, including Sailboat Hull and Deck Repair and Sailboat Refinishing , which we were about to purchase. There are several other interesting chapters, like Sailboat Electrics Simplified and Canvas and Sail Repair.

100 Fast & Easy Boat Improvements by Don Casey
Book Cover

Here is another great book from Don Casey. This book is well worth the price.

Cruising Cuisine: Fresh Food from the Galley by Kay Pastorius
Book Cover

This excellent book was a gift from Harry on our trip from FL to NC. There are some great recipes here.

KISS Guide to Sailing by Steve Sleight
Book Cover

This is a good book for learning how to trim your sails.

Seloc Honda Outboards 2002-08 Repair Manual: 2.0-225 Hp, 1-4 Cylinder & V6 Models (Seloc Marine Manuals)
Book Cover

I didn't have a clue about repairing the Honda outboard on our dinghy. This book has a wealth of information on repairing and maintaining all Honda outboards.
