Illinois to North Carloina

We are on a schedule. We have our annual “Beach Week” in Ocean Isle Beach. We have to get ready, drop off the RV in New Bern, NC and pick up Adam and Ava in Myrtle Beach, SC in six days. We also want to get the front-end aligned in New Bern before we leave for Myrtle Beach.

We plan to stop in Ohio and West Virginia and maybe in North Carolina, before getting to James’s outside of New Bern.

Chillicothe, OH

We leave the campground in Palatine, IL at 8:00am. We stop at a rest area at 10:00 and again at 2:00 for gas. A couple of hours later we get to Sun Valley Campground, in Chillicothe, OH. This campground doesn’t accept credit cards, but they do offer Good Sam discount. We pay $32.40 for a site with water sewer and electric.

We have a nice campfire. The next morning, we dump and rinse our black and gray water tanks and fill our fresh water tank. We plan to boondock at Tamarack Place tonight.

We put our slide-out in. When it comes in we hear a noise. We try to put it out, but only one side goes out, so we pull it back in.

Beckley, WV

We drive 178 miles to Tamarack Place, in Beckley, WV. We stopped here last year. Tamarack Place is a visitor area that features products from West Virginia.

We go in for lunch. We both have fried chicken and sweet tea ($27). We buy jelly, wine, pepper relish, and honey ($53).

We go back to the RV and try to see what’s wrong with our slide-out. We don’t see anything, so we look up RV repair shops near New Bern.

We go back in Tamarack for dinner. We have pork loin and flatbread ($22). We spend more than we normally would, but we park the RV overnight for free.

The last time we were here we were the only RV parked overnight. This time there are about a dozen RVs parked here.

Washington, NC

Today is Monday and we get up early and get on the road. We want to try to bring the RV somewhere and get the slide-out fixed. We call Advantage RV in Washington, NC. He says he will look at it if we can get it there before 5:00.

We stop once to get gas and pee. We get to Advantage RV at 4:00.

They look at the slide-out and decide we need to order a new motor. We make arrangements to drop the RV off in three days so they can work on it while we are at the beach. They will also look at the automatic steps, which are back to not working.

Ernul, NC

We drive to James’s in Ernul. We get there at 6:05. We drove the RV 490 miles. It has been a long day.

On Wednesday, I drive the RV to J W Sanders for a front-end alignment. Fran follows in her brother’s mustang. We leave the RV and go to breakfast. They call and say we need two new tires in front. We knew the tires were wearing unevenly, but we didn’t realize they were so bad. They tell us the tires were toed-in 35°. and we were “chewing up the road”. We would have done this sooner but we couldn’t find anyone who could do a front-end alignment on a RV. The total bill is $1064. We keep one tire as a spare.

On Thursday, we drop the RV off in “Little Washington”. The automatic steps start working again.

We drive the mustang down to Wilmington and stay at Shannon’s. We pick up Adam and Ava at Myrtle Beach airport on Friday and drive back to Wilmington. Our beach house is reserved from Saturday to Saturday. We have a great week.

The RV is ready, but we they are closed Saturday afternoon and Sunday. We stay with Erika, Steve and Johnny on Saturday night. On Sunday, we drive down to Ryan and Audrey’s, but Ryan has to work. We drive back to James’s, stopping in Wilmington to buy a dress for Katie and Adam’s wedding.

James’s brand-new A/C has stopped cooling. The bedroom we would sleep in is 87°. It’s cooler in the living room. Before we left for the beach, we ordered a new RV mattress from Amazon.com ($599), so we set up our new mattress on the living room floor. It’s a Denver queen size RV mattress with radius corners. It sleeps great.

We pick up the RV Monday morning. The slide-out is fixed. The automatic steps didn’t stop working. It costs $216 with our extended warranty. (The warranty has a $200 deductible and doesn’t cover shipping for parts.) The warranty paid about $200.

We drive back to James’s. We get the RV ready for the next adventure.
